Steering Wheel Shimmy

While driving at certain speed, the steering wheel chatters towards the direction of rotation of steering wheel. When a car steering wheel vibrates and the vibration is towards the direction of rotation of steering wheel, this steering problem is called shimmy.

There are three reasons that cause this steering problem namely, unbalance front tire and road wheel, vibration from irregular road surface, and unbalance objects rotating with front tire and road wheel. When the vibration occurs on the latter causes of problems it will transmit to the steering linkage into the steering wheel, thus resulted in car steering problems such as shimmy.

  1. A blinding article, however, this is not always the case as you'll find that often worn steering rack or steering box mounting bushes, when worn can cause excessive "play" or vibrations which will travel through your steering wheel or even pedals sometimes.

This is however dependant on the location of the rack or box.
