If one side hotter than the other, this implies that the wheel which is hotter has a dragging brake. Therefore, dragging the brake is causing the car to pull. As indicated, one front wheel (i.e. rim/hubcap) was hotter than the other. A dragging brake (i.e. a brake that doesn't fully release) will cause this to happen because of the intense heat generated as a result of the constant friction. Further, a dragging brake will cause the vehicle to "pull" because of the imbalance it creates in the front end of the vehicle.

What to do?
Take the car to a reputable repair shop (AAA-approved shops are recommended) and ask a mechanic to inspect the front brake unit which seems to be dragging. Tell the mechanic this is what you believe is causing the vehicle to pull slightly.

You may be wondering what's causing the brake to drag? Well, if you're lucky, a corroded support bracket will be the culprit. This will only mean cleaning the bracket with a wire brush and then coating it with a suitable lubricant.

However, if the support bracket looks good and is free of corrosion, the piston inside the brake caliper could be seized. If this is the case, you'll have to replace not only that entire caliper but the other front brake caliper as well since both calipers must match. Good luck.

But if one side is not hotter than the other rule out the dragging front brake. Therefore the cause of the problem is slightly out of alignment wheels.

The idea of "wheel alignment" basically has to do with how straight the wheels are relative to the vehicle's frame. If the wheels are slightly out of alignment (i.e. sort of "crooked"), the vehicle will have a tendency to pull. Although this isn't much of an explanation, there really isn't much more to say about this without going into a lot of technicalities that only a professional mechanic would understand (and AutoTech is assuming you're not a professional mechanic).

What to do?
Getting an alignment job should fix the "pull". Incidentally, whenever the wheels are out of alignment, the tires will wear abnormally. Therefore, have this problem taken care of soon to avoid further tire wear. Some mechanics may tell you they can't do an alignment properly without first replacing one or more front-end parts. If this is what a mechanic tells you, get a second opinion before proceeding with any such repairs.

Try to find a garage that is approved by the AAA. Such garages tend to be reputable and, best of all, if you do have a dispute after the work is done, the AAA has the policy to investigate the situation and resolve it.

The car pulls heavily to one side while driving, either the car pulls to the left or pulls to the right. When a car pulls heavily to either left or right while you are driving, it is an indication of three possible problems, a mismatch front tire pressure, and out of alignment wheels or a dragging front brake.

(2) Out of alignment wheels.
(3) Dragging brakes.


Car troubleshooting

Start the diagnosis by checking the tire pressure on both the front tire, get a tire pressure gauge and check the tire pressure, the tire pressure must be the same as the recommended inflation pressure by the car manufacturer. The recommended inflation pressure can be found on the car owners' manual or the sticker adhere to the driver's side door. The inflation pressure of both the front tire must be the same, if not then this causes car pulling.

If the inflation pressure is the same, the next is to check, if one of your car's front brakes is dragging.
Drive the car for a minimum period of 15 minutes to park car. Get out of the car and touched the hub of each front wheel, Observe if one hub is hotter than the other, if so then the one with the hotter wheel is the one with a dragging brake thus causing the car to pull heavily on one side. However, if there is no difference in temperature between the left and right hub wheel then the only remaining possible reason for car pulling is an out of alignment wheel.

Wheel alignment has to do with how straight is the wheel relative to the car frame, if the wheel is out of alignment this can cause the car to pull heavily on either left or right. Uneven front tire inflation pressure, front brake dragging, or out of alignment front wheel

What to do?
If the problem is uneven tire pressure on the front, just make sure that the front has the same inflation pressure equal to that of the recommended inflation pressure by the car manufacturer.

If the problem is the dragging front brake, bring your car to a reputable auto repair shop and ask the mechanic to inspect the front brake where the dragging occurs and repair it if necessary. Sometimes the cause of brake dragging is just a corroded support bracket and can easily be fixed by just cleaning the support bracket with a wire brush then coat it with a recommended lubricant.

If the problem is an out of alignment front wheel, likewise bring the car to a reputable auto repair shop for alignment to fix the problem and avoid a much worst uneven tire wear.

When the car pulls to the right when braking, this problem points to something involving either, the front tires, front end, or front brakes. The rear tires, rear end, and rear brakes aren't really the factor here.
